Back in the 1990s, Kirk Lawrence's first job selling weed was at a record store in Far Rockaway, Queens, where he had to be cautious. Despite facing numerous arrests over the years due to police crackdowns on marijuana users, Mr. Lawrence, now 45, persisted. He experienced rides in police vans and lockups "for smoking outside my job." However, he recently secured a job as a budtender in a Manhattan dispensary, where he now openly sells cannabis. When the opportunity presented itself, he thought, "why not?"
