Cooking with Cannabis: Green Dragon Tincture Recipe

Using tinctures for medicinal and wellness purposes is nothing new. Healers have used them for centuries. The Green Dragon cannabis tincture recipe is just as old. You can make it with any strain you like and it’s a wonderful way to use up shake and trim you have leftover. Cooking with cannabis to make wellness products allows you to fully customize your experience; the strain, the potency, and the flavor are all up to you. Once you get the hang of creating tinctures, it’s really quite easy.

What is a cannabis tincture?

Strictly speaking, in chemistry tinctures are alcohol-based formulas containing plant or animal matter dissolved in ethanol. When it comes to cannabis tinctures, there’s a little more flexibility. Some recipes replace alcohol with vegetable glycerin for those who wish to avoid it. While still potent and effective, these aren’t true tinctures.

In cannabis tinctures, decarboxylated cannabis is soaked in strong alcohol to release the cannabinoids and terpenes into the liquid.

What is Green Dragon or Golden Dragon Tincture?

Green Dragon tincture, also known as Golden Dragon, can refer to tinctures made from pure cannabis and alcohol or used as a general term to describe any tincture containing cannabis. Some people enjoy further customizing their tinctures with complementary medicinal herbs like calming Valerian root as well as flavor enhancers like honey.

How to Make your Own Cannabis Tinctures

This is the most traditional and basic way to create homemade cannabis tinctures. Gather up these items:

  • Dried cannabis flower
  • Baking sheet + access to an oven
  • High-proof alcohol – the higher proof, the better!
  • Air-tight glass jar

Chop or grind the dried cannabis into very small pieces. Don’t pulverize it or you’ll have a hard time straining the very small plant matter out of your finished product.

Decarboxylate your cannabis to activate the THC. You can’t skip this step if you want a potent tincture.

Place the decarboxylated cannabis into the jar and top with approximately 2 oz of alcohol. Seal tightly.

Store the jar in a cool, dark place. Allow it sit for several weeks, making sure to shake it once per day.

Once the alcohol is fully infused, strain the tincture with fine cheese cloth or coffee filters to remove plant particles. You should have around 1 oz of dark liquid.

Store in an eye dropper bottle for easy dosing.

What Can I Expect?

The Green Dragon cannabis tincture is fast-acting when placed inside the cheek or under the tongue. You should feel effects in approximately 15 minutes. Tinctures are longer lasting than smoking cannabis. The effects may last up to 5-6 hours.

Start with a very low dose to see how the tincture affects you first. After waiting an appropriate amount of time (30 min- 1 hr) increase your dose as needed to achieve your desired results. Make a note of your custom dosage.

Homemade CBD Tinctures

If you’d like to make your own CBD tinctures at home, you can follow the Green Dragon cannabis tincture recipe but use hemp or high CBD strains instead of THC-rich cannabis.
