Feeling Anxious? Cannabis Can Help
If you’re feeling more anxious and stressed out than usual, you’re not alone! While cannabis is sometimes associated with paranoia, for many people it provides a release from both feelings of stress and anxiety. In fact, a recent medical study has discovered a link between cannabis and the reduction of these physical and mental feelings.
40 Million Americans Suffer from Anxiety Disorders
Did you know 40 million Americans (18% of the population) suffer from anxiety disorders, many of which are undiagnosed? Anxiety disorders occur when there’s too much communication between the frontal cortex and amygdala. Anxiety can be a debilitating problem that saps enjoyment from socializing, work, and other normal activities.
“The circuit between the amygdala and the frontal cortex has been shown to be stronger in individuals with certain types of anxiety disorders. As people or animals are exposed to stress and get more anxious, these two brain areas glue together, and their activity grows stronger together,” says author of the study, Sachin Patel, MD, PhD.
How Does Cannabis Help Anxiety?
The cannabinoids in cannabis are similar to our body’s naturally occurring cannabinoids, and both work in identical ways when attached to receptors in the brain. The endocannabinoid 2-AG is thought to be the barrier that breaks communication between the two brain regions responsible for creating anxious feelings and behaviors. When this endocannabinoid fails to do its job, that’s were the identical cannabinoid in cannabis steps in, silencing the communications from amygdala and frontal cortex and restoring calm.
Symptoms of chronic anxiety include irritability, mood swings, insomnia, dietary changes, weight loss/gain, chronic pain, depression and feelings of worthlessness. Anxious people are also often plagued by persistent negative thoughts, fatigue and headaches.
Relieve Symptoms of Anxiety with Cannabis
Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is unique which makes it impossible to predict how any one cannabis strain might affect you. However, we recommend starting with a balanced hybrid and smoking small amounts. Too much cannabis can have the opposite effect of smaller doses, increasing anxiety. Some popular strains for treating anxiety include White Widow, Sour OG, Granddaddy Purple.
