3 Roguelike Games to Enjoy on National Video Game Day

roguelike games offer endless replay value!

For National Video Game Day, we’re sharing a list of three roguelike games you may have missed when they first came out. Roguelike games share three common elements: permanent death, randomly generated levels and typically, turn-based combat. Roguelike literally means Rogue-like – like the 1980 classic video game Rogue, the first to feature these unique game play twists.

Roguelike or Roguelite?

Sometimes you’ll hear the term “roguelite.” This means the game has some of the elements of a roguelike game but not all. It may have procedurally generated levels but no permadeath, for example. Roguelike games have high replayability. Random levels mean you’ll never have the same play-through twice. And with permadeath, that’s it for your character. No loading saves. You have to start from the beginning. This gives you opportunities to use different characters or new tactics and experience more of the game. Expect to die frequently in roguelike games!

Top Roguelike Games You May Have Missed

Time to get high and play some video games! Here are three of the top games that have been out for a while. If you missed their release, now is a good time to splurge on some summer gaming!

Slay the Spire

Available on all platforms, including mobile, Slay the Spire is a roguelike with a twist. It features random maps, turn based combat and yes, permadeath. Choose a character and ascend the spire while building a card deck to defeat your enemies.

Darkest Dungeon

Choose your party wisely in this gothic roguelike RPG. Random dungeons are filled with treasure and turn-based combat encounters. Manage your character’s well-being by curing afflictions of the body and mind. Don’t get too attached. Permadeath ends with your heroes in the graveyard but fortunately, a new stagecoach has just arrived…

Children of Morta

Children of Morta is a dungeon crawling roguelike game in the traditional fantasy setting. Lead your family of heroes in cleansing the corruption of Mount Morta.
